Despite govt spending thousands of crore rupees, Ganga river turns from bad to worse
India TodayEven after India Today had in June exposed the deplorable state of River Ganga despite the Centre spending thousands of crore rupees in the last 4 years, its condition has turned from bad to worse and the river water looks like a nullah in Kanpur. If we directly consume the Ganga water without filtering then there are high chances of falling ill." Another resident said, "The tanneries are constantly dumping garbage and industrial waste close to the Ganga River. The Khalasi line drain discharges lakhs of litres of sewage water into the river everyday but it hasn't been tapped in the last 4 years despite repeated assurances from the central and state governments. Speaking at the 'Namami Gange' event in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, "We have decided that by December 15, ahead of the Kumbh, no drain water will flow into the Ganga River without a filter."
