Broncos’ pass protection remains major issue despite offensive line spending spree
New York TimesAfter Sean Payton’s offense scored just eight points in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, the Denver Broncos head coach was asked about the notable absence of big pass plays for the unit. That’s only one fewer than Denver’s tally through six games last season, when it went on to allow a franchise-record 63 sacks. The loss to the Chiefs on Thursday included Denver’s worst offensive performance of the season — and Wilson’s worst statistical game since joining the Broncos ahead of the 2022 season. The Jets showed a four-man pressure, and McGlinchey was tasked with handling edge rusher Jermaine Johnson, who quickly burst off the line and got his hands underneath the right tackle’s pads. “The emotions of this game ride high and low all the time, but you have to stay within the process, and you have to stay focused on the mission of this team and individually and be a professional and get better.” Pressure issues are rarely solely the responsibility of the offensive line, however, and the numbers suggest Wilson shares culpability in Denver’s protection woes.
