'Urgent' public health concerns raised as whooping cough cases reach nine-year high

Whooping cough cases across Australia have exploded this year, with infectious disease experts saying reported numbers are cause for "serious public health concerns". "The fact that young children are missing from that data and not featuring highly is a result of our vaccine success and especially the program to offer free whooping cough boosters to all pregnant women," he said. Whooping cough vaccine recommendations are: Infants and children: A five-dose schedule at two, four, six and 18 months, and four years of age. The Australian Department of Health said that vaccinating pregnant women reduces the risk of babies contracting whooping cough by 75 per cent.
