Football, cricket and rugby chiefs to face government questions on how coronavirus has ravaged sport
Daily MailFootball, cricket and rugby chiefs face a grilling from MPs next week on how coronavirus has impacted their sports. It is the first time the Government has stepped in to rescue a sport, in an intervention which was hailed by organisers of next year’s Rugby League World Cup in England. Questions will range from grassroots to top level where the likes of the Six Nations were halted Jon Dutton, chief executive of Rugby League World Cup 2021, said: ‘We very much welcome the emergency support that Government has given to rugby league in England at this time of significant challenge. ‘The funding is undoubtedly recognition of the importance of the sport and next year’s Rugby League World Cup. ‘Rugby league is a sport that unites communities, brings people together and has a demonstrable social impact particularly in the north of England where we will stage 85 per cent of the tournament’s games.’
