Community champions law to castrate paedophiles in Nigerian state

Despite criticism from rights groups, families of young rape victims in Kaduna state say they support the new law. “Evidence shows that the certainty of punishment, rather than its severity, deters crime,” Bachelet said drawing on Nigeria’s low record on rape convictions. “They said he was having diarrhoea with blood – now that’s not too common,” says Dr Musa. “We’ve not been able to get a conviction out of the many rape cases that we’ve had,” Evon Benson-Idahosa says. “I have been hearing news that once the issue is forgotten, are going to still come back to Kaduna – so it’s not nice,” she says, angry about the lack of accountability.
