JK Rowling reveals she is a domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor in wake of trans row
The TelegraphJK Rowling has revealed she is a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault, as she explained why she felt so strongly about women’s rights. Stars including Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the films, and Eddie Redmayne, the star of Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts films, distanced themselves from her comments. Emma Watson waded into the row last night by posting a tweet in which she told her trans followers “the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are”. The actress, who played Hermione in the Harry Potter films, invited her followers to make a donation to the Mermaids transgender charity, writing: “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.” In response to the row, Rowling published an essay in which she spoke of her first marriage to Jorge Arantes, a Portuguese journalist.
