How toilets at home, cash in hand and literacy added 1.8 crore women voters

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw an additional 1.8 crore women voters compared to 2019, largely due to the rollout of women-focused welfare programmes, according to a report by SBI Research. A 1% rise in literacy contributed 45 lakh more female voters, while house ownership, particularly under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, added 20 lakh women to the voter turnout. On average, female voter turnout grew by 7.8 lakh in each of the 19 states that implemented the schemes, contributing to a total increase of 1.5 crore women voters. HOW WOMEN WELFARE SCHEMES TRANSLATED INTO VOTER NUMBER SURGE A 1% increase in literacy rate led to a 25% rise in female voter turnout, suggesting that of the 1.8 crore incremental female voters between the 2024 and 2019 general elections, approximately 45 lakh can be attributed to improvements in literacy.
