Prevent ‘tent strategy’ in Erode (East) byelection, insists a litigant before Madras High Court
The HinduA writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court accusing ‘a popular political party’ of having adopted ‘tent strategy’ during the 2023 Erode Assembly constituency byelection. The petitioner has sought a direction to the Election Commission of India to prevent such a strategy in the second bypoll scheduled for the same constituency on February 5 this year. Raja, who had contested as a candidate of Kongu Desa Marumalarchi Makkal Katchi in the 2023 bypoll, had filed the petition claiming that he did not file his nomination this year fearing the repeat of the “tent strategy.” The petitioner alleged that during the 2023 byelection, necessitated due to the death of Congress MLA E. Thirumahan Everaa, a prominent political party in the State had put up temporary tents in every ward and ‘detained’ large number of voters over there from dawn to dusk by providing free food and promising cash doles in return for voting in favour of that party. Such a strategy was adopted by the “powerful party” to prevent other contestants from meeting the voters and campaigning effectively, the petitioner said and attributed his poor performance in the 2023 bypolls to the “tent strategy.” He apprehended that a similar strategy would be adopted during the present bypoll necessitated due to the death of Everaa’s father E.V.K.S.
