Emily Thornberry caused a stir by acknowledging the 20 per cent levy to fees would force children to leave, but said: 'It's fine.' Shadow education secretary Bridget Philipson flatly contradicted Mrs Thornberry in interviews this morning, saying she would be 'having a word' with her colleague 'Actually what we are seeing across the state sector is a falling number of pupils in our classrooms because of the falling birth rate, and there are fewer young people arriving at school. A spokesman for campaign group Education Not Taxation said: 'Labour once claimed that children in state schools were packed like sardines, yet Emily Thornberry says she's fine with stuffing even more children in.
