Brandon Ingram’s connection with new Pelicans coach Willie Green has led to improved play: ‘There are times when he’s just taking over the game’

When Willie Green took the job to be the new head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans in July, the first task on his to-do list was clear: get on the same page with the two stars of the franchise, Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. Green’s recent playing career and strong relationships with stars like Chris Paul, Devin Booker and Stephen Curry during his prior coaching stops made him the right kind of candidate to solve the issues that haunted New Orleans last season, when former coach Stan Van Gundy was unable to connect with his players. Ingram altered his approach, and he’s looked like a different player as New Orleans has gradually steadied the ship after a 3-16 start to the season. Last year under Van Gundy, nearly 50 percent of Ingram’s possessions either came on plays where he was the ballhandler in the pick-and-roll or when he was spotting up on the perimeter, according to Synergy. We’re just looking for ways he can attack defenses and make it hard for them to scout what he’s going to do.” This new approach has also changed where Ingram’s shots are coming from.
