Fact Check: Old video of miners being rescued in Congo FALSELY linked to the ongoing conflict
Thousands of people fled Goma, a major city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, after Rwanda-backed rebels claimed to have captured it. Allegedly, these miners were trapped after M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo dropped an explosive inside a gold mine. An X user shared this video and wrote, “BREAKING NEWS; Rescue underway in Gold mine Goma Eastern DRC Congo after M23 of Rwanda supported by Kagame dropped explosives inside.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today found that the video shows a March 2023 incident when nine miners were rescued after a gold mine collapsed in Congo following heavy rains. As per a Reuters report from the same date, this incident happened in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s South Kivu province following heavy rainfall.
