COP26 brings focus on climate change again, but where do the biggest polluters stand?
India TodayEvery second the world emits 1,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide, almost 70 times higher than the pre-industrial era of 1850-1900. As world leaders sit down to discuss limiting global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels, drastic cut in carbon emission is the key. According to reliable estimates, limiting global warming is possible only if the existing level of carbon emission is cut by 40 to 50 per cent by 2030 and net addition is brought to zero level by 2050. According to data by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, United States, the earth's temperature has risen by 0.08 degree Celsius per decade since 1880. These emissions need to fall to half of their 2010 level by 2030 to keep alive the Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to below 1.5 degree Celsius.
