Delhi government's UCMS takeover sparks faculty and staff backlash

India Today

The Delhi government's order to de-affiliate the University College of Medical Sciences from Delhi University's list of affiliated institutions has invited strong resistance from the faculty and academic communities. The employees are concerned that the move, which puts UCMS under the administrative and financial authority of the Delhi government, will have a negative effect on the institution's academic reputation and financial health. UCMS was founded in 1971 and initially started functioning from DU's chemistry block, with medical classes taking place at LLRM Medical College, Meerut. With the standoff prolonging, UCMS' future remains uncertain, with the staff and faculty clamouring for the organisation to continue existing under DU jurisdiction while the government of Delhi insisted on total ownership.
