Why Elon Musk's SpaceX and not Isro launched India's GSAT-N2 satellite
FirstpostThe GSAT-N2, a high throughput Ka-band satellite, will deliver high-speed broadband internet connectivity and digital video and audio transmission across India. New Space India Ltd is paying Elon Musk’s SpaceX Rs 500 crore to send the rocket to space. Isro chairman S Somanath told The Times of India, “SpaceX’s Falcon-9 will launch Isro’s Gsat-20, also called GSAT N-2, on November 19.” The satellite weighs 4,700 kilos. Dr M Sankaran, director of UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, told the outlet, “GSAT-20 is India’s highest throughput satellite.” Eighty per cent of the GSAT-N2’s capacity has been sold to a private player. The Isro’s Launch Vehicle Mark-III satellite, which is the Indian space agency’s ‘well-proven and reliable heavy lift launcher,’ can carry communication satellites weighing up to 4 tonnes into geosynchronous transfer orbits.
