Physiotherapist sentenced to 44 years’ RI for sexually abusing mentally and physically challenged girl

The Thiruvananthapuram Additional District and Sessions Court, which deals with cases relating to atrocities and sexual violence against women and children, sentenced a city-based physiotherapist to 44 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹8.5 lakh for sexually assaulting a minor girl, who is mentally and physically challenged, repeatedly during treatment. found Shinoj M. Raveendran, 42, of Varuvila in Puthenkada guilty of crimes under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act including those pertaining to aggravated penetrative sexual assault, sexual harassment and rape on a child. According to the prosecution led by special public prosecutor Ajith Prasad J.K., the survivor, who has 74% permanent disability and suffers from spastic diplegia, cerebral palsy and seizure disorder, was treated by the accused in her residence from 2011 to 2019. It was only in 2019 that the survivor disclosed her ordeal to a clinical psychologist, following which her family approached the State Police Chief.
