Taiwanese man jailed in China for taking photos of police, freed after 1,400 days

India Today

The year was 2019. Taiwanese businessman Lee Meng-chu was arrested and jailed after he clicked pictures of police officers in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. “I’ll never return there.” In an exclusive interview with The Washington Post, he recalled the firsthand account of how Chinese law enforcement uses coercion, threats and trickery to build a case against someone they have decided has crossed its national security “red lines.” WHAT HAPPENED IN 2019? Right before his China trip, Lee said he made a brief stopover in Hong Kong, where he watched a rally from the sidelines and passed out pamphlets with messages of support. Refuting the spying allegations, Lee said, "I am only a curious passer-byâ€æ if it really were some state secret, how could everything be seen from a hotel?"
