Why Indian doctors prescribe Remdesivir for Covid-19 despite negative global medical view
India TodayWhile a cacophony has broken out over the shortage of Remdesivir injections across the country, international health experts are wondering why it is so widely being prescribed in India. Dr Aviral Vatsa of the National Health Services Scotland said, “The UK guidelines, the Stanford US guidelines or even WHO guidelines have clearly said that there is no clear evidence any impact on patient’s mortality, patient’s need for mechanical ventilation, or any other important outcome factors for patients.” Dr Vatsa cautioned that the drug can be tried only in specific situations, that too, on a tiny minority of critical patients, which account for five to ten per cent of the total Covid-19 cases. Even in hospitalised patients, which would be five to ten per cent of the whole positive patient population — only five to ten per cent — even among them, Remdesivir could be tried on a small minority of them under specific situations.” He emphasized that central drug authorities should update their guidelines about Remdesivir based on the evidence of its efficacy in Covid-19 treatment.
