Western Green Energy Hub proposal would transform the Nullarbor. What are the odds of it going ahead?
ABCWestern Australia's ancient Nullarbor may be on the cusp of a wild transformation. "The proposal that's gone to the EPA, I'm sure has cost several million dollars to put together," he says. Mr Pettitt says the green hydrogen industry is "highly speculative" at this stage and the state's focus should be on reducing domestic fossil fuel reliance by encouraging large-scale renewable projects that will feed into the grid. "Let's get on and do renewable energy where it matters right now — connected to the West Australian grid, decarbonising the state rather than pretending that green hydrogen's going to solve all our problems," he says. "This is kind of like the beginning of the North West Shelf project," he says, referencing the $34 billion liquefied natural gas project off the state's northern coast, pioneered 40 years ago.
