Judge who promised bail for Rs 5 lakh fails to get bail himself in bribery case

The Bombay High Court on Monday refused anticipatory bail to Satara district and sessions judge Dhananjay Nikam, who had sought pre-arrest protection after being booked in a bribery case. The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau has accused Nikam of demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh in exchange for granting bail in a cheating case. His daughter subsequently filed a fresh bail application before the Satara sessions court, where Nikam was set to hear the matter. The ACB alleges that two individuals, Kishor Sambhaji Kharat from Mumbai and Anand Mohan Kharat from Satara, demanded Rs 5 lakh from the woman on Nikam’s behalf in exchange for a favourable ruling.
