‘Abandoned mines cannot be used for dumping waste’
The HinduThe National Green Tribunal has declined a plea moved by the three civic bodies seeking direction to allow the use of Bhatti Mines for dumping of garbage. A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel observed that abandoned mines need to be closed and cannot be allowed to be used for dumping of any material. The observations came when the green panel was hearing a plea moved by the North, East and South Delhi municipal corporation seeking permission to dump the “inert” waste that is extracted from bio-mining of the Bhalswa, Okhla and Ghazipur landfill sites in the mines of Asola Bhatti Sanctuary. Earlier, the State government and the civic bodies were directed to deposit an amount of ₹250 crore in an escrow account to facilitate the waste removal from the landfill sites.
