SA Premier hits back after Mark McGowan warns of COVID-19 'community spread' if borders reopen
ABCAs South Australia looks towards reopening to the eastern states at the end of the year, the decision could see its border close in the west. Key points: WA Premier Mark McGowan says SA "may regret" opening its borders if it results in community transmission SA Premier Steven Marshall said the state would begin reopening once vaccination rates reach 80 per cent Mr Marshall said he was working towards having "normalised" borders at Christmas SA Premier Steven Marshall has previously said the state would shift from statewide border restrictions to locking out localised areas once COVID-19 vaccination rates reach 80 per cent. When asked to respond to Mr McGowan's comments, Mr Marshall today said WA would be in a "very isolated situation" if it were to close its borders to SA. "As we increase the vaccination rates, we reduce the transmissibility, we reduce the risk and we can hope to be working back towards a sort of normalised arrangement in terms of state borders towards Christmas." Mr Marshall said while there would always be a "small percentage" of people who did not want to be vaccinated, there had been a move towards "much lower hesitancy" in South Australia.
