Nitish Kumar's silent M-Y strategy
India TodayThe Muslim-Yadav or M-Y combination has always been part of the electoral strategy in Bihar. An examination of Nitish Kumar’s list of candidates for the Janata Dal or JD reveals a distinct strategy to wean away part of the M-Y vote that the RJD takes for granted. The numbers may be far less than what the RJD has fielded--58 Yadavs and 17 Muslims—but as a JD strategist points out, “The challenge for the RJD always has been to win over others, whereas for us it is to chip away at the RJD’s support base.” Nitish is also hoping to win over the Yadavs with the choice of candidates. “From fencing of cemeteries to starting the Talimi Markaj to skill development programmes like Hunar and Auzar, Nitish Kumar has done everything for Muslims,” a senior JD-U leader said. The Muslim community must recognise that while others have only paid lip service and played divide and rule, Nitish Kumar has delivered concrete work to ensure real empowerment of Muslims.” The JD has also sought to reassure the community that they will have nothing to fear despite its realignment with the new and aggressive BJP and it will continue to protect their interests.
