Tyler Wright has been attacked by men while surfing, and new research says she is not alone

Tyler Wright has been verbally and physically abused while in the water — and she's not alone. "Women surfers reported they feel terrified sometimes, because they have to prove themselves every time they're surfing, to the men or boys in the water," Dr Kaya said. "There'll be days where the surf's really good at Cronulla Point, but I know there'll be some surfers in the water that will make that experience horrible," she said. "This can only change if the surfing industry or sport industry has strong leaders and especially women leaders supporting young generations." "Having more women supporting young generations, would also bring cultural change, and that will impact the structural change in the surfing industry," she said.
