Beijing tightens its grip on China's $32bn gaming market
The TelegraphIn 2015 worth $22.2bn, China sailed past the United States as the most lucrative video games market on the planet. Fuelled by the surging popularity of mobile, esports and ‘Battle Royale’ games, this year the Chinese gaming industry will generate sales of $38bn. State censure of non-Chinese developed games lead to increased software piracy and a slew of ‘copycat’ games, while video game consoles were banned in the country outright from 2000 to 2015. Despite this, China’s workforce and schoolchildren, looking to escape the stress and pressure of everyday life found solace in the searing heat and neon light of game arcades and internet cafes, as well as mobile games. President Xi Jinping lamented poor optical health in China, with Beijing’s Ministry of Education almost immediately responding by targeting video game addiction as the main culprit.
