NCESS's data bank to help predict landslides in Western Ghats

KOTTAYAM: The National Centre for Earth Science Studies is preparing a data bank for predicting landslides in the Western Ghats region, which will be ready in two to three years, Dr V. Nandakumar, group head of its crustal programmes, said. “The Western Ghats is the most vulnerable area where incidents including landslides are a regular phenomenon. The study undertaken by the NCESS is conspicuous in the wake of the recurring landslides in places especially Munnar and the absence of any solid strategy for countering it. This is despite that the study undertaken by various agencies found that Munnar is the most vulnerable place for landslides in the state in the wake of heavy rainfall.
