Over ₹2-crore penalty imposed for illegal waste dumping in Periyar

Local bodies on the banks of the Periyar have imposed a total penalty of over ₹2 crore on those responsible for the illegal discharge of untreated water and waste dumping into the waterbody, according to official data available as of January 2025. The civic bodies that had initiated action include the Kochi Corporation, Aluva and Kalamassery municipalities, and Choornikkara panchayat, according to the monthly progress report on short-term measures taken as part of the Periyar river action plan submitted by the government before the tribunal. The monthly progress report for January 2025 said the Aluva municipality had imposed ₹3.1 lakh on those responsible for illegal discharge of untreated wastewater into the river. The Kochi Corporation collected a total fine of ₹1.32 crore for illegal waste dumping as part of the project to detect pollution sources in the Edappally canal.
