Supreme Court raps UP govt over demolition of houses in Prayagraj: ‘Shocks our conscience’

The Supreme Court on Monday criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the demolition of houses in Prayagraj, saying it had shocked its conscience. The top court was hearing a plea by advocate Zulfiqar Haider, Professor Ali Ahmed, and others whose houses were demolished in 2021. During Monday's hearing, the top court said that it would allow the petitioners to reconstruct their demolished home at their own cost if they were given an undertaking before the appellate authority within the specified time and didn't claim equities over the plot or create third-party interests, according to PTI. The apex court had previously slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over the demolition of houses in Prayagraj without following due legal procedure and said the action sends a “shocking and wrong signal”, according to PTI.
