AP-Genco commissions new 800 MW thermal unit

Deccan Chronicle

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation successfully commissioned its new supercritical 800 MW unit at the Dr. Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station in Ibrahimpatnam of Vijayawada on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, energy minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy said commissioning of the unit will bolster the state’s capacity to provide reliable and affordable electricity to every consumer in the state. Chakradhar Babu said the new unit is designed to operate with washed coal having a GCV of 4,200 Kcal / kg, unlike other 800 MW units that required imported coal for blending. Chakradhar Babu said with a capacity addition of 800 MW, the thermal capacity of AP-Genco and APPDCL has increased from 5,810 MW to 6,610 MW, which supports more than 50 per cent of the state power demand.
