Writers’ retreats | Finding their muse, from Goa to Himachal

It was on the remote Scottish island of Jura that George Orwell found the perfect “extremely un-get-able place” to write 1984. “Each retreat has a different flavour,” says Tara Khandelwal, founder of Bound India, an independent brand that helps writers get published, which began with a writers’ retreat five-and-a-half years ago in Goa. It felt like serendipity.” The participants at Bound India’s retreats have been “curated” to include people of all ages, from all walks of life — marketing executives, advertising professionals, students, artists and more. “It’s an immersive experience, not least because it offers peer-to-peer review.” Intersections of lived experience Access is also key to the mission of Silk Road Slippers, an all-women initiative, whose writing masterclasses, led by Nobel laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah and Booker-winning author Shehan Karunatilaka, will take place in Marrakech in November. “The moment you start charging for writers’ retreats, then anybody can come, and it becomes a money-making thing,” she says.
