World's largest study into period pain to help women understand what is normal

After a decade and a half of crippling pain and near-constant periods, Claire Yelavich cried tears of relief when she was offered a hysterectomy at the age of 35. Pain not just 'part of being a woman' Researchers are hoping to prevent girls and young women having to go through experiences like Ms Yelavich's through new research into how young women learn about periods and what is considered normal. "A lot of these young women, they could identify some problematic menstrual symptoms, but a lot of them hadn't heard of or couldn't identify common menstrual conditions like endometriosis, polycystic ovaries or vulvodynia," he said. Dr Armour said the survey also revealed that around 90 per cent of girls and young women were experiencing period pain, with about 20-25 per cent saying painkillers provided no relief. "Women feel that pain is just part of being a woman, it's normal it's something they need to put up with," he said.
