Transgender community demand clarification from CPI(M) for a social media post seeking a separate policy for the community in the State
The HinduThe queer and transpersons community in Tamil Nadu have demanded clarifications from the State’s Communist Party of India for insisting on a separate policy in the State to protect the rights of transgender persons. In an open letter to the CPI by the queer and transperson community on Thursday, they cited the recent social media post put out by CPI, seeking a separate policy for transgender persons in the State. The community referred to the election manifesto of the CPI in 2024, promising the LGBTQIA+ community a comprehensive anti-discriminatory bill, legal recognition and protection for same sex couples similar to marriage, reservation in educational institutions, reservation in employment, and measures to address bullying, violence and harassment of gender non-conforming and LGBTQ+ students and teachers in educational spaces. However, the Tamil Nadu unit of the CPI had recently issued an ambiguous statement calling for a separate policy for transgender persons in the State.
