Oxford University to return stolen bronze idol of Thirumangai Alwar to Tamil Nadu

India Today

The bronze idol of saint-poet Thirumangai Alwar, valued at crores and stolen decades ago from the Soundararaja Perumal Temple in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, is set to be repatriated from London to its rightful place of worship. The Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID has confirmed that Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum, where the idol has been housed since its acquisition in 1967, has agreed to return it following a detailed investigation and compelling evidence of its origins. The Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID began its investigation in 2020, tracing the idols through evidence collection. Following this verification, the university’s council pledged to return the idol and offered to cover all costs for its transfer to Tamil Nadu.
