What is Endometriosis? How does it happen?
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where an extra tissue known as endometrium grows outside the uterine cavity. Retrograde menstruation This is the most widely accepted theory, suggesting that menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows backwards through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity instead of leaving the body. Coelomic metaplasia This theory posits that certain cells in the peritoneal lining transform into endometrial-like tissue due to environmental or genetic factors. Stem cell origin Some researchers believe that stem cells responsible for regenerating the endometrial lining may migrate to other regions and differentiate into endometrial-like cells, causing ectopic growth. It emphasises that: Growth: The ectopic tissue grows under the influence of hormones like GnRH, LH, and FSH, mimicking the behaviour of endometrial cells in the uterus.
