For years technology companies have been trying to persuade the world that working in shorts and a T-shirt is the best way to ensure success. The sharp suits worn by Don Draper and his colleagues in Mad Men may have lay behind their success according to new research which has found wearing a suit can improve your creativity However, a starched collar and tie can also make people seem less approachable and distant. Dr Michael Slepian, a psychologist at Columbia University in New York who led the study, said: 'People wear formal clothing in a variety of situations, such as when at work, meeting someone new, or on a job interview. However, the new research suggests this relaxed way of working may mean Google is not getting the best from its employees Dr Slepian and his team used five experiments to examine how people felt and reacted when wearing different types of clothes. Dr Slepian and his colleagues said: 'People who wear formal clothes describe themselves as more competent and rational, whereas people who wear casual clothes describe themselves as more friendly and laid-back.
