Holiday for 'political' events, why not for Netaji's birth anniversary: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has questioned the central government for not announcing a holiday on January 23, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. In an apparent reference to the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony, and terming it 'political', Mamata Banerjee hit out at the Centre and said holidays were granted for "political publicity". "I am ashamed that a holiday was given for political programmes, but not for people who have laid down their lives for the country," Mamata Banerjee told a gathering at a program in Kolkata. Further, at the event to commemorate Netaji's birth anniversary, Mamata Banerjee asserted she fought all her life to get the government to declare Netaji's birthday a national holiday.
