Sharks’ depth chart 2.0: How Patrick Marleau and Matt Nieto fit into the lineup

New York Times

There’s a good chance that the Sharks’ roster is set after Tuesday’s announcement that they’ve signed of Patrick Marleau and Matt Nieto to a pair of one-year, $700,000 deals. Still, general manager Doug Wilson has attempted to address his team’s two biggest issues from 2019-20 — the Sharks’ dismal depth at forward and the ghastly goaltending. Here’s our best guess, and analysis, about what their opening night lineup and depth chart might look like: Forwards LW C RW Meier Hertl Labanc Kane Couture Donato Nieto Handemark Marleau Sorensen Kellman Noesen Extras: Noah Gregor, Dylan Gambrell, Alex True, Sasha Chmelevski, John Leonard, Lean Bergmann Analysis: The easiest place to start here is filling out the top two centers in Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture. There’s still a chance that the Sharks could pursue a cheap right-shot free agent to fill this spot, which would allow Ferraro to play his natural left side. The Sharks are high on Melnichuk, so I’m listing him third on the depth chart ahead of Korenar, who struggled with the Barracuda last season.
