What’s next for Simone Biles and USA Gymnastics? A riddle to solve for L.A.

PARIS — The question Simone Biles hates most, the one about what’s next, and more specifically Los Angeles in 2028, is essentially the riddle facing USA Gymnastics for the next four years. They have entirely and necessarily changed the conversation about their sport; you do not need to age out when your age stops ending with the word “teen.” Once, Jones, now 22, might have thought her Olympic dream died when she tore her ACL at trials; now when she says she’s coming back, she has a path to follow. “If you’re smart about training, you don’t have to necessarily peak when you’re 16 because these girls …,” technical director Chellsie Memmel said, before stopping to correct herself, “these women are continually learning and progressing and doing those skills — harder skills than they were at 16. It is, to Biles’ point, almost unfair to talk about Los Angeles before the shimmer of Paris has even faded, but the four-year cycle comes quick and pauses for no one.
