Can we live forever? Should we want to? Reflections on ageing, vulnerability, and inequality

Can we live forever? Christians, of course, following the Nicene Creed, believe in “the resurrection of the body and the life of the world to come.” The procedure called cryonics might come close to the idea of “the life of the world to come”, whereby people at the point of death are deep frozen to be restored to life at some future date when medical science can restore them. Many gerontologists believe that life expectancy might increase by two years every decade, taking average life expectancy to around 100 years in this century. Life expectancy among white non-Hispanic young men without college qualifications is declining, according to well-known research by Anne Case and Angus Deaton. Many demographers have now identified a third demographic transition in the developed world where, while people live longer lives, the total fertility rate is below 2.2 and hence societies no longer have population replacement.
