David Hockney says he is relocating to France where he can 'smoke in restaurants' and work 'twice as much'

He is arguably Los Angeles' most famous artist, despite hailing from Bradford. But David Hockney has revealed he is turning his back on the city where he painted some of his greatest works, because of America's censorious attitude to smoking. The 82-year-old, who first moved to the city in 1964 after leaving art school in London, has told The Wall Street Journal Magazine that he is relocating to Normandy so that he can eat and smoke at the same time. Once considered one of America's most licentious cities, Los Angeles in recent decades has become a haven of clean living. From his Los Angeles studio, surrounded by cigarette butts which he reportedly extinguishes on his carpet, the man considered one of Britain's greatest modern artists offered a candid assessment of the future.
