Telangana: State asks IIT-H to study impact of AP's Polavaram project

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has asked IIT-Hyderabad to study the flooding and submergence of areas in the state caused by backwaters of Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram project and submit a report in one month. It may be recalled that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, at a meeting in January first week to review irrigation related issues, directed that officials reach out to IIT-Hyderabad for a study. Principal secretary Rahul Bojja, who wrote to IIT-H, asked the institution to study the impact of flooding, and submergence in Telangana due to the Polavaram project, and suggest preventive and remedial measures. Among the terms for the study are that IIT-H will examine a report from the Central Water Commission in 2016 on Polavaram project’s backwater impact, and possible scenarios once AP completes construction of the project with a 45.72 metre height and achieves full reservoir capacity.
