Chola-era precious Lord Krishna idol repatriated to Tamil Nadu from US

India Today

An 11th-12th century Chola-period idol of ‘Kaliya Marthana Krishna’ has been returned to Tamil Nadu from the United States, with the help of Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID police. To locate precious idols smuggled from temples in Tamil Nadu, the special teams of the Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID police routinely search websites of foreign museums, art galleries, and private collectors. After diplomatic efforts involving the Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID police, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, and Archaeological Survey of India, the Thai government returned the idol to India on June 25, 2024. The idol was received by the Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID police in New Delhi on September 4.
