It is a recognition for Kerala’s healthcare system, says Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram on Padma Bhushan honour

“I dedicate this great recognition to the entire people of Kerala and the country,” was how renowned cardio-thoracic surgeon.Jose Chacko Periapuram responded after hearing that he has been awarded the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order. A veteran in the field of cardio-thoracic surgery with an experience of about three-and-a-half decades, Dr. Periappuram said that it came as a surprise, though he was aware that he was nominated for the third highest civilian honour. An acclaimed cardiac surgeon and medical author, he holds the recognition of having performed the first successful heart transplant in Kerala. He was also instrumental in setting up the ‘Beating Heart Bypass’ programme and ‘Arterial Bypass’ project in Kerala.
