Shopping centre torched and shops looted in Papua New Guinea after 'glitch' short-changes public servants' pay packets

Papua New Guinea's national cabinet has called in defence personnel to restore order in the face of major rioting and unrest in the country's capital. In a statement, PNG Prime Minister James Marape said the country's national cabinet had authorised defence personnel "to assist police restore order in the city". Papua New Guinea's taxation body blamed a payroll "glitch" for the error. Samson Komati, chief executive of the online PNG Think Tank, said Papua New Guineans were "fed up already" with the Marape government over a range of issues, including tax rates, inflation and unemployment.
