‘We have to be heard’: Zach LaVine, Thad Young speak out on racial injustice

As agony turned to rage and peaceful demonstrations devolved into acts of defiance across America last Saturday night, Zach LaVine sent a tweet. “Everybody has a voice right now,” LaVine said, “and we’re bringing attention to it to where we have to be heard.” The hope is that enough people receive the message and, like Napear, Brees and the mighty NFL, might someday have a change of heart. I haven’t been able to do that, but come this November I’m going to because I know it’s going to change something.” pic.twitter.com/jGdzRtJ0Sb — Percy Allen June 5, 2020 The 24-year-old LaVine admitted that he has never voted but explained Friday how he’s come to see his constitutional right as more of a civic duty, saying failing to vote in local, state and federal elections was “not doing my part in the community.” “It just wasn’t something that I was hip to,” he said. White men and white women look at my mom differently because she’s with a black man.” LaVine also said he has recognized a racist portrayal of black people in the mainstream media. “There’s a lot of frustration, not in just the black community but a lot of communities where looting and things are going on,” he said.
