"Despite initial resistance to the idea, Dr Singh persuaded Prime Minister Narasimha Rao to approve the devaluation in two stages," Dr Ahluwalia noted, adding that these decisions were part of a broader set of reforms aimed at addressing India’s fiscal challenges. Reflecting on a pivotal moment in 1991, Dr Ahluwalia recalled that when Narasimha Rao was set to become Prime Minister, the Cabinet Secretary informed him of the country’s poor financial situation.
