Montek Ahluwalia recalls working with Manmohan Singh: He inspired me to...

India Today

Ex-deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Saturday reflected on his decades-long association with former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, whom he first met in 1973. Later, when Dr Singh became Prime Minister, he asked me to serve as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 2004 to 2014," Ahluwalia said. "Despite initial resistance to the idea, Dr Singh persuaded Prime Minister Narasimha Rao to approve the devaluation in two stages," Dr Ahluwalia noted, adding that these decisions were part of a broader set of reforms aimed at addressing India’s fiscal challenges. Reflecting on a pivotal moment in 1991, Dr Ahluwalia recalled that when Narasimha Rao was set to become Prime Minister, the Cabinet Secretary informed him of the country’s poor financial situation.
