Don Wehmann spent nearly eight years living with friends in various apartments around the East Side of Manhattan. “It was the right time to have my own place.” He was also motivated by his younger sister, who had bought a co-op unit two years earlier. “That was a kick in the butt,” said Mr. Wehmann, 31, who manages commercial real estate projects for a hedge fund. “I feel like, living in New York, wherever you kind of land, you have a loyalty: East Side, West Side — kind of like East Coast, West Coast,” Mr. Wehmann said. “I showed him things in his price range, and I think he was totally depressed about what he could afford,” said Ms. Bateman, who also urged him to be aware of an apartment’s natural light.
