Sri Lanka lifts ban on Facebook, WhatsApp days after terrorist attacks
India TodayThe Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday revoked the temporary ban placed on the social media platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Twitter within the country following the terrorist attacks that killed over 250 people and injured over 500 others. Upon revoking the ban, the the head of the department, Nalaka Kaluwewa in a statement to EFE said that the government was appealing social media users in the country to "be responsible in their usage of social media sites even though the ban has been lifted," IANS reported. Following the terrorist attacks, the Sri Lankan government put a temporary ban on the social media sites in the country in a bid to restrict the spread of misinformation, hate speech and violence in the country. Last year, the Sri Lankan government, according to a New York Times report, had briefly banned social media platforms, in particular Facebook, after a wave of rumours appeared to have instigated anti-Muslim riots and lynchings in the country.
