Tamil Nadu: 7-year-old male elephant dies of electrocution in Nilgiris
India TodayA seven-year-old male elephant was electrocuted to death in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district on Thursday. An inquiry by forest officials revealed that a tea plantation owner named Shaji set the electric fence up illegally as it was close to the forest land. Though permission was provided for farmland owners to cover the land with a solar-powered electric fence, Shaji had reportedly used high voltage electricity, routing it from his house connection, officials said. In a similar incident in January, a 20-year-old elephant died after being electrocuted by a fence placed illegally by a farmer in Semmedu village in Coimbatore.
