Cold case rapist sentenced to more than 10 years in jail over Newcastle assault in 1995
ABCA serial rapist who violently attacked a young woman as she walked home from work in 1995 has been jailed for a decade but will be eligible for parole next year. The court today heard Bratic had already served other several jail sentences since 1999 for sexual offences in Queensland and Victoria, including what District Court Judge Peter Whitford described as a "violent" sexual assault against a 14-year-old girl. The court today heard Bratic was 27-years-old when he grabbed the woman as she walked home alone from work in the early hours of October 8, 1995, and dragged her into a laneway. Judge 'pessimistic' about offender's risk of re-offending In handing down his sentence, Judge Whitford told the court Bratic "overpowered and physically restrained her" which involved "grabbing her by the neck and applying pressure to her neck each time she made a noise". Judge Whitford today told the court Bratic's offending was "extremely violent and perpetrated opportunistically on vulnerable victims" and he was "guarded if not indeed pessimistic" about his risk of re-offending.
