A day after the Union government said in Parliament that the Centre had no role in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act job card deletions and that funds under the schemes are being disbursed on time, the office-bearers of NREGA Sangharsh Morcha, an organisation that works for MGNREGA workers, on Wednesday said that what the Parliament was told is “untrue” and the government is “far away from the realities of the ground”. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, the MGNREGA workers said that they will hold a two-day protest at Jantar Mantar starting Thursday and will expose the inadequacy of budgetary allocations for the scheme by the Narendra Modi government and the arbitrary deletion of job cards across the country. Citing the official guidelines which say that the Union government must transfer MGNREGA wages within seven days of receiving electronic invoices from the States, the organisation cited an analysis of 3.2 crore wage transactions from FY 21-22 by LibTech India which reveals that 63% of the wages were delayed beyond seven days. Making matters worse, ABPS requirements like stringent KYC procedures and Aadhaar seeding with bank accounts have caused widespread deletion of job cards, with 9 crore names having been deleted since FY 2022-23,” he said.
